Urbanisation - mehak jain - 11-20-2014

Urbanisation : A process of urban growth guided by socio-cultural, economic, political and physical factors and spatio-economic planning interventions.

A process in which labour from rural areas moves to urban areas to meet the demand for cheap labour for industrial development leads to urbanisation. The driving force for rural-urban migration mostly refers to economic incentives, as described in Todaro's model.

Impact of Urbanisation

The urban environment is deteriorating very rapidly. All cities have severe shortage of water supply, sewerage, developed land, housing, transportation and other facilities. The level, quality and distribution of services have been very poor. Large segments of urban population do not have access to drinking water, sanitation, basic health services and education. Deteriorating infrastructure, weak municipal institutions and poor delivery systems have constrained the urban economy and its ability to generate employment, incomes and services for the poor.
