The 2 million Housing Programme for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) was a housing scheme launched in India in 1998 with the goal of providing affordable housing to low-income families in urban areas. The scheme aimed to address the shortage of housing for economically weaker sections of society and improve their living conditions.

Under the program, the government provided financial assistance to eligible families for the construction of houses in urban areas. The houses were built on government-owned land and were allotted to beneficiaries through a lottery system. The program was implemented in partnership with local authorities and non-government organizations to ensure effective implementation and community participation.

The Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMGAY), also known as the Rural Housing Scheme, was a housing scheme launched in India in 2000 with the goal of providing affordable housing to rural families living below the poverty line. The scheme aimed to address the shortage of housing in rural areas and improve the living conditions of low-income families.

Under the PMGAY, the government provided financial assistance to eligible families for the construction of houses. The houses were built on government-owned land and were allotted to beneficiaries through a lottery system. The scheme also provided subsidies for the construction of homes with basic amenities such as toilets and drinking water.
