Indian Marriages - Before and Now (kal, aaj aur kal)
#1

Marriage are made in heaven but solemnised on the earth between two young entities. This is what and how this premise of marriage is described. Matrimony used to be a different ball game in early twentieth century. Parents had all the rights to decide the fate of bride and groom. With their discretion, marriage were consented to be abide by. There was no resistance offered from either bride/groom.

Looks were secondary. Family strength and money were matter of prime concern. Dowry was matter of status. Bride in particular had no voice. Requirement of education was abysmally low for marriage proposals, rather it mattered less or none. Taking out marriage procession from one place to other was not only cumbersome but also full of dangers because of rough and secluded terrain full of wild animals and robbers. Dowry was prevalent social stigma still status symbol, for groom side and forced bride side to accede to their demands. No resistance from either bride side or society to demands of dowry and brides parents had to accede to the demands as proclaimed. Gradually perception of life and requirements changed.

Foray of education into life changed the climate of marriage where consent of both bride and groom started gaining equal weight. Colours of life changed so is the choice of contenders. Selection of choicest life partner became virtuous and concept of love marriages started replacing arranged marriages. With influx of education specially in girls, changed scene of marriages with consent of bride for marriage gained recognition. Choice of both bride and groom were of equal importance for the marriage being solemnised.

Coming to the present times, the modern era with the advent of Internet, life shifted its origin. Girls education in Higher studies changed gender bias and brides choice became obvious and important. The brides began franchising their choice and prioritised with demands on parity. Judging what is right or wrong is not the area of concern but fresh lease of turnaround created out of education and demands of parity subdued other obnoxious practices that gripped the society for years into shackles of backwardness.

Equality bounced over gender bias and in extreme cases, brides started shelving undesirable marriage proposals. These conditions emanated of financial independence that girls acquired of late.
Meanwhile a parallel system of match making through computerised kundli came into existence.

All astronomical calculation mattered to masses for nuptial knots. With the progression of time and medical technology, a voice emerged amongst the system to evaluate medical history of either of two, bride and groom before entering into marriage. Family history of both started gaining importance for the life style diseases such as diabetes, cardiac problems and blood group tests for future of their offsprings.

There are parameters of medical parlance that will decide future course of marriages and its concept. Instead of matching kundli as practiced, brides and groom will ask for all major tests for AIDS, cardiac prone tests, diabetes, thyroid and all major profiles such as renal, lipid etc and tests related to life style diseases. If found compatible, marriages will proceed. Other parameters such as education, smartness and money shall also become secondary and financial independence of both bride and groom will carry weightage.

This will pave the way to absolute turnaround in society and health, equality and financial independence will fast replace lagna matching, a must parameter for matrimony, a legitimate change for healthy society in the times to come.
