Identification of Lighting Requirements

Lighting requirements are primarily dictated by the function of a space or the tasks being performed within it. Lighting requirements are usually specified by value of illuminance

The National Building Code of India 2016 (NBC 2016) provides recommended values of illuminance for different types of spaces. These recommended values are based on the activities that are carried out in the space, as well as the age of the occupants.

Here are some of the recommended values of illuminance as per NBC 2016:

Residential spaces:
a. Living room – 100-200 lux
b. Bedroom – 75-150 lux
c. Kitchen – 300-500 lux
d. Bathroom – 150-300 lux
Educational spaces:
a. Classroom – 300-500 lux
b. Laboratory – 500-750 lux
c. Library – 300-500 lux
Office spaces:
a. General office – 300-500 lux
b. Conference room – 500-750 lux
Healthcare spaces:
a. General ward – 100-300 lux
b. Operating room – 1000-2000 lux
c. Intensive care unit – 300-500 lux
Industrial spaces:
a. Factory – 200-500 lux
b. Workshop – 300-750 lux
c. Warehouse – 100-200 lux
