VILLAGE ARCHITECTURE : 
Appropriate technology at the service of tradition

From the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea, Indian villages have many similar features. The houses
are grouped in various zones, corresponding to the castes. with community spaces between them. From the main street, with its services (shops, temples, schools). narrow alleys lead to small squares surrounded by houses. Much of everyday life takes place in these community spaces, where children play, women come to fetch water and old people sit and talk under the
banyan tree. This spatial layout of the villages dominates the existence of the 600 million peasants who make up some three-quarters of the popuiation. And the same-layout even underlies the plan of cities. But the architecture itself varies according to the region or the climate.
