August 5, 1 997. Gujarat High Court orders immediate closure of 1,200 sari dyeing and printing units in Jetpur. Work is suspended in one of the largest sari dyeing and printing destinations in the country.

September 8, 1997. Polluting industries are allowed to reopen on the plea that over 30,000 people will lose their livelihood. Units are allowed to reopen on the condition that treatment plants be set up and the industry will pay a compensation of Rs 1.25 crore.

People of Dhoraji municipality, downstream of Jetpur, heave a sigh of relief as hopes of getting potable water are rekindled after a struggle of 20 years.
