The English word 'paradise' is simply a transliteration of the old Persian word pairidaeza referring to a walled garden; pairi means around and daeza means wall.' The paradise promised in the holy Quran is a beautiful garden, with shade and water as its ideal elements. 'Garden
underneath which rivers flow' is a frequently used expression for the bliss of the faithful, and occurs more than thirty times in the Quran.
In the paradise garden four main rivers are specified water, milk, wine and pure honey. Also, fruit trees in abundance are mentioned. The concept of a paradise garden was originally conceived from the quartered garden, known in Persia as the char bagh, or four gardens, divided by means of four water channels and contained within a private walled enclosure.
