This chapter will:
1. outline some of the fundamental principles on which the need for sustainable site planning is based;
2. give some guidance on the historical development of ideas about site planning;
3. list some of the major concepts which can influence decisionmaking about the physical, natural and social environmental
factors related to site planning;
4. indicate some of the work that needs to be done before the detailed site planning process is initiated in order to identify
the key issues.

Fundamental principles
Four fundamental principles can be identified which establish the need for environmental planning for site development.
