AR 1.02 BUILDING CONSTRUCTION 1

Time: 3 hrs
Maximum Marks: 100
(The student should write his/her Roll No on the top of the Question Paper immediately upon receipt)

NOTES : 
1. Attempt questions in ALL PARTS 
2  Attempt ONE question each from Part B, C and D.
3. Drawing questions may be drafted on cartridge sheets or neat sketch drawings on graph paper

PART - A  
(5 marks x 5 =25 Marks)

Q1. Explain with notes and/or neat sketches ANY FIVE (only) of the following

a) What are the following in the context of brick masonry Quoin, Queen Closer, Perpend, Stretcher face, Frog?
b) Differentiate between Cement Plaster and Cement Mortar 
c) What is "curing"? Explain its relevance in construction.
d) Explain "toothing" and "racking back" in the context of brick masonry 
e) What is NGL, Plinth Level, Founding / Formation Level, FFL? Explain using neat sketches
f) Discuss the purpose of DPC Explain 'vertical' and 'horizontal' DPC
g) What are the following terms in stone masonry Spandrel, Skewback, Abutment, Haunch, Bonder stone?
h) Discuss load bearing and framed structures. What is soil bearing capacity?

PART - B
(Answer any ONE question in this Part - Each question carries 25 marks) 

Q2. Draw the FOUNDATION DETAILS of an external load bearing wall in 230 mm brick masonry. The section between an internal room and a lawn outside should indicate all 
layers, finishes, plinth protection, levels and dimensions. Scale 1:10 
Q3. Draw the Section through the roof level of a load bearing brick masonry building, with a parapet of 1000 mm height. The drawing must include waterproofing, insulation and rain water disposal and finishes. It must be fully labelled with all specifications and dimensions Choose a suitable scale.

PART-C
(Answer any ONE question in this Part - Each question carries 25 marks)

Q4. Draw the plans of alternate courses of a 230 mm brick wall in DOUBLE FLEMISH Bonds showing "L' junction and one square-stopped end' Also draw the elevation for at least six brick courses Your drawing must be fully labelled and should include basic dimensions Scale 1.10.


Q5. Draw the plans of alternate courses and elevation of 6 courses for the following in English Bond: 'T' junction OR 'Cross-junction' in a 230 mm and 345 mm brickwork combination.

06. Discuss the importance of bonding in brick masonry. Explain with neat proportionate sketches: Stretcher Bond, English Bond, Flemish Bond and Rat-Trap bond. Explain Cavity walls and the relevance of building such walls in hot climates.

PART -D
(Answer any ONE question in this Part - Each question carries 25 marks)

07. Discuss 'Stone', different types of stone and their availability in the local market. What is Stone Masonry? Explain RUBBLE and ASHLAR masonry, and also give examples.

Q8. Draw the Elevation and reflected plan (soffit) of a SEGMENTAL ARCH in conventional bricks with recessed pointing. The wall is 230 mm Flemish Bond. The Springing Line is about 2000 mm from the brick plinth, and the span is between 900 to 1100 mm. You may make any other assumptions. Label all components of your arch. Scale 1:10.

Q9. Draw the Elevation and reflected plan (soffit) of a Semi-Circular Arch in Fine Ashlar faced Masonry. The Springing Line is 2000 mm and the span may be taken between 1000 to 1200 mm. Make any other assumptions Label all components of your arch. Scale 1:10.
