Individual or GroupTerritory

Territory

It is generally accepted that there is an instinctive urge in man to define the limits his individual and group territory. This applies to all areas of life, inside as well as outside the home.

Why is it important to define territories within a housing area?

1. To give residents a sense of personal pride and greater self-esteem.

2 To enable residents to exercise individuality in the way they personalize 'their' territory (house/garden) without fear of public intrusion.

3 To give each resident (and the public) a clear idea of who owns what; this will help to encourage the residents to provide surveillance over 'their' area which would naturally help to reduce the level of vandalism .

It seems, therefore, that there should be a hierarchical series of territories with easily recognizable boundaries on each housing estate.
